SEQUENCE OF EVENTS OF PAKISTAN'S SLIDE INTO FANATICISM

The recent breakthrough in Kashmir has raised hopes of peace in the Indian subcontinent. The expectations are both unrealistic and premature. The Kashmir issue has always had three clear dimensions, internal, regional and international.

The cease fire and talks with the Hizbul Mujahideen (HM) as well as overtures to the Hurriyat conference leadership caters to the 'political' aspect of the internal crisis. It still does not address the core issue of lack of social and economic development that lies at the root of the internal unrest.

In the changed post Cold War world, the all powerful US is no longer taking an anti Indian stance and to that extent pressure on India has eased.

But the third dimension of the problem , Pakistani hostility is no where near being addressed. The roots of Pakistani paranoia go deep. Till such time as the civil society in Pakistan does not develop and address this issue , peace will continue to remain a mirage.

Fears of Indian cultural invasion are manifested by ban on Indian books, films, newspapers and denial of cultural contacts. Adherence to 'POLITICAL ISLAM mandates claims of racial connection with the Middle East, but cultural similarity poses a challenge to this notion, hence no cultural contact with India. Same is the case with pre ninth century history. Thus Porus and his defiance of Alexander is eliminated from history books.

One of the crucial reason for this could be that unlike Iran, no independent Indian Islamic school has arisen, hence there is a need to deny Indian origin to justify adherence to alien Wahaabi school of Islam. The Saudi cash also plays a significant role in it.

The Pre-tenth century period is described as Dark Age to show the decadence and injustice of the Indian system and justify Islamic inroads because of injustice of caste system. This in any case is quite close to truth and is accepted in India as well by many.

But this reasonable and logical view gives rise to another contradiction and that is if Muslims indeed were part of the Hindu society and revolted against the injustice of caste system then they are part of the whole and NOT a separate nation.

The sole justification for Pakistan is thus centred around the concept of 'HOME LAND FOR INDIAN MUSLIMS.This links Pakistan firmly with India and South Asia and is in tension with 53 year old Pakistani attempt to be part of the Middle East.

Till such time as Pakistan does not resolve its dilemma, hostility to India will continue as also proxy war in Kashmir.

Following is the resume of events and trends that is self explanatory.

1

Islamic Reforms in April 1977.

Middle East and Saudi Arabian influence increased due to the rise of money power of the Middle East ( after the oil shock of 1973) and so also the Waahabi Islam.

OIL, AID AND JOBS CAME WITH THIS.

Strong cultural dependency on the Middle East is a hallmark of the Islamisation process in Pakistan. Indegenous scholarship of Islam took a back seat.
